The legendary Italian designer Valentino to step down
Valentino to step down Valentino has confirmed that he will step down from the company after just one more ready-to-wear show and one final Haute Couture collection to be staged in January. “I have decided that this is the perfect moment to say ‘addio’ to the fashion world,” the designer said in a statement.

“My future will be filled with new interests and challenges,” he said. “Some may be linked to fashion, as I have a strong desire to create and support institutions to promote the study of fashion design, and to preserve the history of the art of fashion. It will be a marvellous continuation of this amazing adventure that I had the privilege to have. Even as a young boy, my passion was to design, and I have been very lucky to be able to do what I have loved all my life.”

Valentino, who in July celebrated 45 years in the business with a lavish party and exhibition of his elegant, beautifully crafted evening gowns in Rome, has during all those years dressed the world’s most glamorous women: Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor, Jackie Onassis, Nancy Reagan, Spain’s Queen Sofia, Julia Roberts and Gwyneth Paltrow.

“Last July, in Rome, I celebrated my 45th anniversary in fashion. It was a moment of infinite magic and tremendous joy, and I cannot fully express with words how deeply moved I was by the occasion,” said Valentino in a statement. “I received an outpouring of good wishes from all over the world, which brought me great satisfaction. I was very touched that friends-old and new-traveled from far reaches to be a part of the festivities. It was a moment that will be impossible to repeat.”

Valentino sold his fashion label in 1998 and since then it has passed through several owners. Most recently, the Valentino Fashion Group was bought by British investment group Permira, which owns Hugo Boss, Missoni and Marlboro Classics as well as a 45 per cent stake in Proenza Schouler.

Rumours have swirled about who will replace Valentino and the former Gucci designer Alessandra Facchinetti is thought to be at the top of the list with Giambattistta Valli, Stefano Pilati and Proenza Schouler duo Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez in hot pursuit.

“I realise the house that carries my name will go through some changes but I wish to think that the team of designers of the various lines - some of whom have been working by my side for many years - will make me proud of Valentino’s products,” the designer added. “My most emotional thanks go to the thousands of people in fashion, and to those the world over who have supported me all of these years. Finally, a special word of heartfelt thanks to my associates who have helped me make my work a success.”
