Actress Audrey Tautou to be the new face of Chanel No. 5 |
Chanel is said to be in talks with petite French actress Audrey Tautou to feature her in a new commercial for its No. 5 fragrance. Audrey Tautou is set to replace Nicole Kidman as the new Chanel No. 5 commercial girl and rumor has it Jean-Pierre Jeunet will direct Audrey for the spot, as he did in “Amélie.”
The actress has also been cast to star as Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel in biopic about the legendary French fashion designer. The film will focus on Chanel’s childhood and early womanhood, prior to her becoming famous.
Coco was born into poverty as Gabrielle Chanel, daughter of a traveling salesman, in 1883. After the death of her mother and abandonment by her father, she spent seven years in a Catholic orphanage, where she learned to sew. But fashion wasn’t her first career choice. As a young woman, Chanel became a cabaret singer, where she acquired the nickname ‘Coco’. While working as a cabaret singer, she also took to sewing the stage clothes for the French cabaret star Minstinguette before being taken under the wing of wealthy, British playboy and a horse breeder Étienne Balsan and then the English polo player Arthur “Boy” Capel. Helped by them, Coco opened her first shop, a boutique and finally a Couture House.
Coco Chanel is an icon because she showed how the woman of the 20th century should look like. She liberated women from the frills and tight corsets of the Edwardian era and introduced knee-length skirts, trim, boxy jackets, traditionally made of woven wool with black trim and gold buttons, little black dresses and large costume-pearl necklaces. She wanted women to look and become independent, strong, successful and confident.
Chanel No. 5 is considered the number –one selling perfume in the world. The perfume was created in 1921 by Ernest Beaux at the request of Chanel, who said about the scent: “This perfume is not just beautiful and fragrant. It contains my blood and sweat and a million broken dreams.” Chanel No. 5 has helped Coco to become a millionaire.
Before Audrey Tautou, famous faces that have endorsed the fragrance were Marylin Monroe, Catherine Deneuve, Carole Bouquet, Estella Warren and Nicole Kidman, who, in 2004, appeared in multi-million dollar commercial, entitled No. 5 The Film. The reunion of the Audrey Tautou and “Amelie” director is expected to generate a high-quality commercial for No. 5.
