Fashion designer Tom Ford opened his first menswear store in Manhattan |
 The designer Tom Ford opened a three storey menswear boutique in Madison Avenue last week and it is also where he debuted his own-name brand. The fashion designer is back with his old partner Domenico de Sole, with whom he brought Gucci into shape in the 1990s.
Tom Ford wants his customers to appreciate the details in his timeless clothes, that they buy to keep for years to come. “It’s a reaction to our world, where everything is so impersonal and things are less and less about quality, less and less about nuance—less and less about people. Maybe I’m in the early stages of longing for the generation before,” Ford told AP.
In his new store the designer presents traditional men’s ready-to-wear collection and custom-made tailoring made in a production deal with Ermenegildo Zegna. Accessories include eyewear, crocodile weekenders, attaché cases, golf bags, luggage and of course a full jewelry collection.
Tom Ford wants to recreate the mood of a 1930s men’s club in his first boutique. The store stands to represent a vision of old-time luxury with beaver rugs, crocodile inspired chairs along with abstract by Lucio Fontana and includes a VIP personal butler service.
“That’s what I want after having designed very trendy collections,” he told WWD. “I really want just beautiful quality, beautiful fabrics and beautiful cuts, and then I want to shop in an environment that is very service-geared,” he added.
Additional stores are planned for London, Milan, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Los Angeles over the next few years, according to his company’s website. Ford is also already considering offering bespoke women’s suiting in about six months.
