2007 CFDA Fashion Awards announced |
Oscar de la Renta and Proenza Schouler’s Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez won the prestigious Womenwear Designer of the Year Award at this year’s CFDA’s. Menswear designer of the year was won by Ralph Lauren, who was up against Steven Cox and Daniel Silver for Duckie Brown, and Italo Zucchelli for Calvin Klein. Lauren also received the first-ever American Fashion Legend Award to celebrate his 40-year career. Oprah Winfrey honored Lauren with the award.
“When you hear it’s so Ralph Lauren, it’s very understood. The name evokes an image ... a lifestyle we all wish we could live,” she said. “He’s admired, imitated but never equalled,” she added.
“I never went to fashion school,” Lauren said to the young designers in the audience. “American fashion is just starting - and the world needs your originality,” he continued.
Others honoured during the 25th annual Council of Fashion Designers of America Awards, held at the New York Public Library include Derek Lam, who won the Accessory Designer of the Year Award, Pierre Cardin, who received the International Award, Patrick Demarchelier, who collected the Eleanor Lambert Award, Philip Lim, who took home Swarovski Award for Womenswear, David Neville and Marcus Wainwright for Rag & Bone won Swarovski Award for Menswear and Jessie Randal for Loeffler Randall, who won Swarovski Award for accessory design.
There were many celebrity guests in attendance during CFDA’s annual awards ceremony, which is often called “The Oscars of fashion.” Michael Kors was accompanied by Debra Messing in a purple jersey halter gown with a plunging V neck, Heidi Klum in a brown gathered gown covered in Swarovski crystals and model Liya Kebede in a cheetah-pattern beaded minidress. Actress Eva Mendes wore a pink gown as she walked the red carpet with Calvin Klein designer Francisco Costa and Kate Bosworth came with Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough of Proenza Schouler.
U2’s Bono and his wife Ali Hewson accepted the Board of Directors Special Tribute for their humanitarian work via video.
