Burberry to move production to China |
 The Burberry company has announced last year their plans to close its Treorchy plant in south Wales, with the loss of 300 jobs. The company decided to make their clothes more cheaply in China.
Now Burberry board members, including Burberry Chairman John Peace and chief executive Angela Ahrendts will be questioned as part of an inquiry to address how globalisation is affecting the Welsh economy. Fashion label executives will be asked to explain to a parliamentary committee the financial justification for the moving the production to China.
Burberry has only two other factories in Britain, both located in Yorkshire. Burberry wants to keep its image as “a luxury brand with a distinctive British sensibility” but it’s going to be difficult as many people now question their British image.
After Burberry’s controversial decision, Britain’s Queen Elizabeth has announced that she may withdraw her Royal Warrant from fashion label. The queen has joined son Prince Charles in expressing her concern about the planned closure of one of Burberry’s factories.
For now Burberry has prepared new ad campaign, which will debut in Vogue’s February issue. Latest ad has been photographed by Mario Testino and it will among others feature Kate Moss, regular Burberry models: Stella Tennant, Lily Donaldson, and Sophie Dahl. British aristocracy will be represented in the ad by Natalia Vodianova's husband Justin Portman and Jasset Ormsby Gore, son of Amanda Harlech.
“The seductive and powerful imagery of Cecil Beaton's photographs were the starting point to this spring's silver advertising campaign,” says Burberry’s star creative director, Christopher Bailey. “Mario captured the essence of the collection, using all our renowned modern British faces, to create a portfolio of magical iconic shots.”
