Show “A Celebration of Oscar Fashion” presents looks that said it all
Halle Barry at OscarsDuring the show “A Celebration of Oscar Fashion” dozens of memorable Oscar gowns have been shown for a private audience of press, stylists and stars in Bevery Hills. The runway show, curated by Andre Leon Talley of Vogue magazine, was held in advance of the 79th Academy Awards that will take place on February 25. Oscar producer Laura Ziskin has said that the show was designed to inspire this year’s nominees and presenters to express their personal style and “create their own memorable moment” at the Oscars.

Many timeless looks were presented during the show, including Arnold Scaasi’s sequined, bell-bottomed suit worn by Barbra Streisand to accept her best actress Oscar for 1968’s Funny Girl and Bob Mackie’s art deco-inspired creation Cher wore in 1987, when named best actress for Moonstruck.

More modern looks presented during “A Celebration of Oscar Fashion” show included Hilary Swank’s midnight-blue backless gown from 2005, two of Renee Zellweger’s dresses, the pastel yellow strapless column she wore in 2001, and the ruby-hued mermaid gown she wore in 2005.

Among the most iconic dresses ever worn on Oscar’s red carpet presented on the show were the vintage Valentino dress that Julia Roberts had on in 2001 when she won for Erin Brockovich, the violet Edith Head gown Elizabeth Taylor wore when she presented at the Oscars in 1970, Gwyneth Paltrow’s pink Ralph Lauren princess dress from 1999, when she won for “Shakespeare in Love”, Armani dress worn by Jodi Foster, Hilary Swank’s backless Guy Laroche gown from when she won her second Best Actress Oscar for Million Dollar Baby and Halle Berry’s embroidered burgundy gown from 2002, when she won for “Monster's Ball.”

“The Oscars is first a celebration of movies, but secondly of fashion. The water cooler talk is always about who won followed by who looked great and who didn’t,” said Laura Ziskin. “It’s such an integral part” of the Oscars, she said. “It’s the biggest fashion night of the year anywhere in the world,” she added.

In recent years stars have been styled by professionals and red-carpet designs have become quite boring. Laura Ziskin wants to encourage women to be more adventurous in Oscar Dressing. “I want people to have fun and express their personality with their clothing, not just take stylists’ advice on how to look appropriate.”
