Legendary couturier Yves Saint Laurent remembered |
Legendary fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent died at his Paris home last Sunday aged 71 after a long battle with brain cancer. Today during his funeral the fashion world will give a last bow to a designer who gave women a wardrobe that spoke of confidence, authority and elegance.
“He’s my big fashion hero and always has been and it’s really sad that he’s gone,” Marc Jacobs told WWD. “I just think to me and to so many others he has been such a great inspiration in terms of everything, first and foremost in terms design. Saint Laurent was the first to look at youth and street culture and take elements and make them chic.”
“Gabrielle Chanel gave women freedom. Yves Saint Laurent gave them power,” said Saint Laurent’s long-time confidante and business partner, Pierre Berge on France Info radio. “Like all creators, Yves Saint Laurent had two faces - a public face and private face.”
“I think I’m in shock. I’m in fashion today because of him. I lived in Paris right next to his first couture house. My mother adored his work and introduced me to it when I was 16. I feel in love with fashion because of Yves Saint Laurent. He was the first international superstar in the modern era,” Vera Wang told WWD.

Alexander McQueen opens store in L.A. but Paris Hilton is not welcomed |
British fashion designer Alexander McQueen is opening his new store in celebrity land Los Angeles but he’s made it quite clear the clientele he is waiting for doesn’t include Paris Hilton.
“If she comes past the shop, hopefully she will just keep walking. I don’t really covet that sort of thing. I’m not too fond of these openings, I find them quite superficial,” said McQueen. “The people who wear McQueen wear it because they want to wear it, not because it’s the new thing in town.”
Although McQueen revealed that he would need to have a lot of red carpet dresses available in his new store he also made it clear in the past that he isn’t too fond of certain celebrities. “I can’t get sucked into that celebrity thing because I think it’s just crass. I work with people who I admire and respect. It’s never because of who they are,” he told US Harper’s Bazaar last year. He also politely declined to invite Victoria Beckham to his London show few years ago.

H&M announce collaboration with Comme des Garcons |
Japanese founder of the Comme des Garcons fashion house, Rei Kawakubo, would guest design a capsule collection for H&M to launch this autumn. The collection will consist of womenswear, menswear, childswear and a unisex scent and accessories.
“I have always been interested in the balance between creation and business,” says Kawakubo of the collaboration. “It is a dilemma, although for me creation has always been the first priority. It is a fascinating challenge to work with H&M since it is a chance to take the dilemma to its extreme, and try to solve it.”
“Rei Kawakubo has been on the top of our wish list for a long time and we are thrilled that she has chosen to collaborate with us,” adds H&M creative advisor Margareta van den Bosch. “We have tremendous respect for Kawakubo’s fashion philosophy questioning fashion’s ingrained patterns and we admire her artistic approach to design. We are particularly excited to launch the collection in Kawakubo’s native country at our launch in Japan.”
